TEHRAN, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Belgian Marc Wilmots has been named as new head coach of Iran national soccer team, Tehran Times daily reported on Wednesday.

The 50-year-old coach will take charge of Team Melli, Iran national soccer team, until the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The annual salary of Wilmots and two of his assistants would amount to 1.5 million U.S. dollars.

The Belgian led his homeland to the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016 but was sacked after that tournament in France.

Wilmots has replaced Carlos Queiroz who left Iran to take over as Colombia coach after Team Melli's AFC Asian Cup 2019 campaign in the United Arab Emirates in January.

Wilmots will start his work as Iran coach in two friendly matches against Syria and South Korea in June.
