MONTEVIDEO, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Uruguayan giants Penarol won 2-1 at Fenix on Saturday to secure the South American country's Apertura first division title with two rounds to spare.

Midfielder Ignacio Lores struck the winner from close range at Parque Curpurru after Maximiliano Perez canceled out Lucas Viatri's early goal from the penalty spot.

The result left Penarol with nine wins, three draws and one defeat as they moved eight points clear of second-placed Fenix.

Penarol are the reigning Uruguayan top flight champions, having finished just one point ahead of local rivals Nacional last year.

The title is awarded to the team that accumulates the most points in the Apertura, Intermediate and Clasura tournaments.
