JAKARTA, May 21 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian court for anti-graft crimes has sent a treasurer of the country's national sport committee to jail over a corruption case, a move aiming at clearing the sport sector from such irregularity.

The Jakarta court for anti-corruption handed down a 1.8-years jail term to treasurer Johny E Awuy who was found guilty of bribing deputy IV for sport development of the country's youth and sport ministry Mulyana and another official, presiding judge Muhammad Arifin said on Monday.

"The court states that the defendant is convincingly proven guilty in conducting corruption," the presiding judge said.

The panel of judges said that the aggravating factor is that the defendant's act is against the government's attempt in fighting corruption.

The court also decided that the defendant must pay fine.

Awuy bribed the officials with total funds of 615 million rupiah (some 43,214.3 U.S. dollars), one car and a mobile phone, according to the court.

Earlier this month, a prosecutor in Jakarta anti-corruption court demanded prison term of 4 years for secretary general of national sport committee Ending Fuad Hamidy who jointly bribed the officials along with Awuy.

Indonesia has been struggling to clear corruption from sport sector which has disrupted efforts to advance the achievement of athletes.
