ACCRA, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday night urged Black Stars attacker Asamoah Gyan to rescind his decision to retire from the national team and make himself available for selection by head coach Kwesi Appiah.

In a telephone conversation with Gyan, Akufo-Addo informed the former Shanghai SIPG goal poacher of the considerable national disquiet over his decision to retire from the Black Stars, according to Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the presidency.

Gyan Monday announced his retirement from the senior national men's soccer team and also recused himself from the AFCON tournament following the decision of the head coach to hand the captaincy to another player.

The decision comes barely a month to the start of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt next month.

Gyan is expected to make an announcement later in the day.

The Black Stars have been pitted in Group F of the AFCON alongside Cameroon, Benin and Guinea Bissau.

The 2019 AFCON, with its new 24-team format, will be held from June 21 to July 19.
