WINDHOEK, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Namibian government on Thursday called upon all Namibians to participate in a 2 percent once-off salary reduction to support national efforts aimed at assisting victims of drought.
In a statement from the country's Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday, Acting Deputy Executive Director Saima Shaanika said the call is a voluntary measure.
"Government is indeed calling upon Namibians to support national efforts aimed at assisting our compatriots who are affected by the drought to cope with the effects of the drought, as well as to increase opportunities for job creation, especially for our youth. This call was also made by our president during the State of the Nation Address," said Shaanika.
"As the president indicated in his statement, cabinet members have already confirmed their commitment to contribute 2 percent of their salary for a period of one year to support the said initiatives, while non-executive parliamentarians were still being consulted," she said.
She said the other stakeholders, including those from the corporate sector, are also being consulted in this regard.
According to Shaanika, the government will announce the progress on and the outcome of the various consultations at a later stage.
