TIRANA, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Albanian President Ilir Meta expressed his readiness to postpone the date of local elections, in an attempt to solve the country's political crisis, the president's press office said in a statement on Friday.

"I would like to express my institutional readiness to set another date for the local elections, in accordance to the will of the political sides," Meta said in his statement.

Meta also appealed to the ruling Socialist Party and to the main opposition Democratic Party to refrain from divisive rhetoric and called for deep reflection.

"Let us put an end to the public speeches and sincerely commit ourselves in finding a prompt and sustainable solution,"Meta added.

This statement comes as part of the efforts made by the Albanian president to solve the political crisis in the country.

According to Meta, the refusal of all opposition parties of the last parliamentary legislature to participate in the coming local elections set for June 30, risks not only the standards of the elections but also the country's political pluralism.

Since mid-February, Albania has been going through a political crisis, with the opposition parties holding several anti-government protests -- some turned violent, asking Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and his cabinet to step down for early general elections.
