TRIPOLI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Stephanie Williams, deputy special representative of the UN secretary general for political affairs in Libya, on Sunday expressed concern over the human rights situation in Libyan prisons.
Williams made her remarks during a meeting with UN-backed GNA's (Government of National Accord) Minister of Justice Mohamed Lamloum in Libya's capital Tripoli.
"While she asserted the UN support to improve the judicial police capabilities, she raised concerns about human rights situation in prisons that require immediate action," said the UN Support Mission in Libya.
Prisons in Libya suffer from a huge overcrowding of inmates.
Prisoners constantly escape from Libyan prisons, due to poor security and a lack of judicial police in the Ministry of Justice.
Libya has been suffering escalating violence and unrest following the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
