ANO movement wins Czech EP elections

PRAGUE, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The Czech ANO party won the European Parliament (EP) elections with 21.18 percent votes and 6 parliamentary seats, according to data from the Czech Statistical Office (CSU) on Sunday.

Civic Democratic Party (ODS) took the second place with 14.54 percent of the vote and 4 seats, followed by the Czech Pirate Party (13.95 percent, 3 seats), Mayors (STAN) with regional partners and TOP 09 (11.65 percent, 3 seats), Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) (9.14 percent, 2 seats), Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party (7.24 percent, 2 seats) and Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (6.94 percent, 1 seat).

The turnout of Czech EP election this time is 28.72 percent, higher than 18.2 percent for the previous one five years ago.

The Czech Republic joined the EU in 2004. According to Czech law, any citizen aged over 18 can vote, so there were some 8.4 million eligible voters in the country with a population of 10.5 million.

In this year's election, 39 political entities were registered for the elections. There were 841 candidates for 21 MEPs.
