MADRID, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Spain's acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday that the results of Sunday's elections showed Spaniards' desire "to move forward, not backing down and not basing the stability of a government on the extreme right".

The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) won the European and local elections, as well as in "a large number" of autonomous communities (Spanish regions), Sanchez said.

He insisted that PSOE is the first political force in Spain and that the Spanish shared their measures "in terms of coexistence, social justice and regeneration".

PSOE's European candidate, Spain's caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said that "we have the conditions to achieve a more democratic and closer Europe".

The minister highlighted the success of claiming 20 of the 54 MEPs that Spain has in the European Parliament.

PSOE was the most voted party in all Spanish Autonomous Communities, except from the Basque and Catalan regions (north), where the regional party (Basque Nationalist Party) won in the former and the separatist "Together for Catalonia" won in the latter.

Regarding the local and regional elections, PSOE was the most voted party and has the possibility of ruling in seven of the 12 regions that held elections.

On Monday, PSOE's Federal Executive Committee will meet to analyze the results, but Sanchez has already asked the liberals of Citizens not to reach agreements with the extreme right wing party Vox.
