China congratulates Mutharika on re-election as Malawian president

BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China congratulates Peter Mutharika on his re-election as president of Malawi, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

Mutharika was on Monday declared winner of presidential election after polling 38.57 percent of the votes. He was sworn in for his second and last term in office in Blantyre on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Lu Kang said China is glad that Malawi's presidential election went smoothly, and believes that Malawi will score greater development achievements under the leadership of Mutharika.

President Mutharika has been attaching importance to relations with China and has expressed the willingness to deepen cooperation with China in various fields, Lu said.

He added that China attaches great importance to relations with Malawi and is willing to work with Malawi to implement achievements of the Beijing summit of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation and consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, so as to comprehensively enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation with Malawi for the benefits of the two peoples.
