UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday called for "utmost restraint" in Sudan and stressed the importance of upholding the human rights of all citizens, a spokesman said.

Noting the communique adopted by the African Union Peace and Security Council during its meeting on May 27, the secretary-general "welcomes the progress achieved by the parties regarding matters relating to the Transitional Institutions," Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Guterres, said, citing a statement issued by the UN chief's office.

"The secretary-general calls on the parties to resume and conclude the negotiations over the transfer of power to a civilian-led transitional authority as soon as possible, as required by the African Union. The United Nations is committed to working with the African Union in support of this process and stands ready to support the Sudanese stakeholders in their efforts to build lasting peace," Haq added.

Sudan's military rulers have reportedly said a protest camp in the capital has become "a threat to the country's national security."

In a televised statement, a spokesman for the transitional military council reportedly said on Thursday that "legal action would be taken" against what it called "unruly elements" at the encampment outside the defense ministry, where protesters have been staging a sit-in for weeks.
