JOHANNESBURG, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) on Wednesday launched six coins of different denominations to commemorate the country's 25 years of democracy.
The commemorative coins include the 2-Rand and 5-Rand coins. These coins are for collection and circulation.
"It is tradition for the SARB to issue commemorative circulation coins to mark both key moments in our history as well as the individuals who helped to shape it. This is a happy occasion for the SARB ... in which we capture some of the essential elements of our Constitution in coins," said Lesetja Kganyago, governor of the SARB.
He stated that the SARB is fulfilling its public service role and a unique way to pay tribute to individuals and events of national importance.
The Finance Minister Tito Mboweni said the coins are important to celebrate the democracy. He pointed out that while doing that, "we have to re-emphasize the independence of the institutions and let's make South Africa a good place to be."
