NEW YORK, June 6 (Xinhua) -- A military vehicle overturned near the United States Military Academy at West Point on Thursday morning, killing one cadet and injuring other 22 people in the vehicle, according to the academy and local media reports.

A total of 21 cadets and two soldiers were inside the Light Medium Tactical Vehicle when the accident took place around 6:45 a.m. (1045 GMT), West Point said on Twitter. The truck was en route to a training site close to the academy, some 50 miles (80 km) north of New York City.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and the injured have been transported to local hospitals.

"My heart breaks for all those involved in the tragic training accident at West Point this morning," New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Thursday morning. "This incident is made all the more heart wrenching as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day today."

June 6 marks the anniversary of D-Day Normandy Landings in 1944 during the WWII, which made a major contribution to the final victory of the Allied in the war.

West Point thanked local and state emergency responders for their assistance on the scene, saying details of the accident remain to be investigated.
