BLANTYRE, Malawi, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Former Malawian Vice-President Saulos Chilima on Friday called on the head of the country's electoral body to resign.

Chilima, who came third in last month's elections, said Jane Ansah, Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) should resign for having presided over fraudulent elections.

Chilima, leader of the opposition -- United Transformation Movement (UTM), described this year's elections as the most fraudulent in Malawi's history.

Chilima said the MEC chairperson should do the honorable thing in the circumstances, to immediately resign so that a more capable person can lead the commission.

"We have gathered enough evidence of the widespread misconduct of the agents of the declared winner, the Commissions officers and security personnel and others, this is the evidence that we shall be taking to court for the court's interventions," he told reporters during a press briefing.

He however urged Malawians to remain peaceful and observe law and order as the opposition is waiting for the court interventions.

Incumbent Peter Mutharika was declared winner of the May 21 polls with 38 percent of the votes but the opposition have rejected the outcome, citing irregularities in the vote counting process.
