BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland box office grossed 778 million yuan (112.88 million U.S. dollars) during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, according to the China Movie Data Information Network Monday.
Cinema-goers had multiple choices ranging from Hollywood sequels like "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" to domestically-produced films including "Chasing the Dragon II" and "My Best Summer" during the holiday, which lasted from June 7 to 9.
However, the box office underperformed that of the last year when the total earning hit 910 million yuan thanks to Universal's blockbuster "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," whose daily revenue surpassed 200 million yuan.
"Dark Phoenix," the latest installment of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" film franchise, topped the box office with 307 million yuan during the four days since its opening on June 6.
The highly-anticipated "Chasing the Dragon II" was unable to live up to expectations and only generated 196 million yuan over its first four days.
"Godzilla: King of the Monsters" unsurprisingly rose to third place on June 7 after opening for eight days and continued to be one of three top-grossing films in the following two days.
