BUCHAREST, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The Western Balkans region is a priority of the Romanian presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) and Romania is ready to support Albania in the EU accession process, Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu told his Albanian counterpart Gent Cakaj on Monday.

"I assure you that Romania will remain the same friend and firm and active supporter of the European objective of the Republic of Albania," stressed Melescanu at a press conference with Cakaj, acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of Albania.

"What we want further is that the whole region progress on its way to the EU on the basis of our own merits and the fulfillment of the accession criteria, in the context of our commitment to further support the EU expansion policy," Melescanu underlined.

The visiting Albanian minister noted that the process of negotiation for EU accession is an extraordinary mechanism of transformation for the country.

Cakaj appreciated Romania's support that "is not just part of the stable bilateral relations, but it reflects a vision on Europe in general and on stability in the Western Balkans in particular."
