UNITED NATIONS, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Tuesday called for an end to violence in Sudan and the resumption of dialogue between protesters and the ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC).

"We are obviously continuing to follow with great concern the situation on the ground in Khartoum ... We would want to see an immediate end to the use of excessive force, a restarting of the political dialogue," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"We would also call for the authorities to stop arresting and detaining people who have themselves a significant role to play in those negotiations, as well as a full restoration of the Internet and other means of communications," he told a regular press briefing.

Dujarric also called on all parties concerned to work together to ensure a peaceful civilian-led transition and sustainable peace throughout the country.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was removed from office by the military on April 11 amid massive protests. The TMC was formed to run the country. The protesters were demanding a return to civilian rule and were met with violence from the military. There was an escalation on June 3 when the use of force led to many civilian deaths.
