Korean Peninsula issue still within framework of political solution: spokesperson

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China called on related countries to continue making efforts to realize denuclearization and sustained peace on the Korean Peninsula through negotiations, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said here Wednesday.

Wednesday marked the first anniversary of the first meeting of the top leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States in Singapore, but it seemed the dialogue between the two countries has not made further progress recently.

In response, spokesperson Geng Shuang said the meeting between the leaders of DPRK and the United States in Singapore made important progress in the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue.

Although the pace of talks has slowed, the Korean Peninsula issue is still within the framework of political settlement, as the DPRK is still committed to denuclearization, and both sides remain committed to solving the issue through dialogue, he said.

It is China's hope that all parties concerned will keep contacts, meet each other half way, and address the legitimate concerns of all parties, to ultimately realize denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, Geng said.

China will continue to work with the international community and play a constructive in the process, he added.
