Ghana detains eight suspects for kidnapping two Canadian women

ACCRA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian security officials are holding eight suspects for the abduction of two young Canadian women in Kumasi, 280 km north of the capital, Minister for Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah disclosed late Wednesday.

There are five Ghanaians and three Nigerians in all, who have been arrested by the security forces who undertook the operation to rescue the two females, said the minister.

Bailen Chitty, 19, and Lauren Patricia Catherine, 20, who were kidnapped on June 4, were rescued in the early hours of Wednesday at Kenyasi, near Kumasi, where they were being held by the abductors.

According to the minister, the suspects fired shots at the security team but were overpowered and arrested, leading to the rescue of the victims.

The minister added that the entire operation was executed by an entirely Ghanaian team.

The official added that the victims had been flown to Accra and were undergoing necessary evaluations following their traumatic experience.
