WELLINGTON, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) of New Zealand said on Sunday the second earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 that rocked the Kermadec Islands region would not likely cause tsunami threat to New Zealand.

The region was rocked by a second quake around 5:30 p.m. New Zealand local time, recorded by USGS at a depth of 35 km.

MCDEM said there were no concerns about that earthquake.

"There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the M6.6 Kermadec Islands region earthquake."

The Kermadec Islands, located about 1,000 km northeast of New Zealand, is the most remote area managed by the Department of Conservation of New Zealand and can only be visited with a special permit.
