LUSAKA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Police in Lusaka, the Zambian capital, on Monday refused to sanction a notification by anti-corruption activists for peaceful protest to show displeasure over rising corruption in the southern African nation.

Last week, the campaigners notified the police on their intention to hold what they dubbed 'Yellow Card Against Corruption' peaceful procession in the wake of revelation by the Financial Intelligence Unit, a government agency that traces suspicious financial transactions, which has shown a growing trend in illicit financial activities.

The peaceful procession was scheduled for Friday, June 21, 2019.

But in a response letter, Nelson Phiri, Commissioner of Police for Lusaka Province, said the procession could not be sanctioned because the police will be engaged in other national duties.

"Therefore, you are advised not to go ahead with your intentions as your security will not be guaranteed especially that the gathering is intended to go until 23:00 hours in the night," he said in the letter on Monday.
