DHAKA, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh received a record 1.763 billion U.S. dollars in remittances from its nationals working abroad in May, the highest monthly amount thus far, a central bank official said Tuesday.

Remittances for May, the eleventh month of the 2018-19 (July 2018-June 2019) fiscal year, recorded a 16.67 percent rise from the same month a year earlier, said the official of Bangladesh Bank's foreign exchange department.

According to the official, previous remittance record was set in January of this year, when Bangladesh received 1.59 billion U.S. dollars in remittances.

Quoting provisional data, the official who preferred to be unnamed told Xinhua that millions of expatriate Bangladeshis remitted home 15,078.81 million U.S. dollars in July-May, 11.05 percent higher than the same period a year ago.

Like past year, the official said, Eid came as a big boon for Bangladesh as the country received huge remittances from non resident Bangladeshis who sent home Eid bonuses too.
