8 killed, 12 injured in collision between 2 vehicles in northern India

NEW DELHI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people, including two children, were killed and 12 others injured early on Wednesday after a pick-up van collided head-on with a goods carrier in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place in Lehrawan village in Sambhal district, 379 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"Early today, a pick-up vehicle collided head-on with a mini truck carrying goods here on Moradabad-Agra national highway, killing eight people and injuring 12 others," a police official posted in Sambhal said. "The injured have been removed to the nearest medical facility and the conditions of a few of them are stated to be critical," the official said.

Police have registered a case to ascertain the reason behind the accident.

A local government spokesman said Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the accident and directed officials to provide proper medical care to the injured.
