BRUSSELS, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The European Union's top diplomat Federica Mogherini said on Thursday that she and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo agreed that military escalation in the Gulf is not in anybody's interest.

When asked to comment on the tensions between the U.S. and Iran upon arrival here at a key EU meeting, Mogherini said: "I discussed this the day before yesterday in Washington D.C. with Secretary (of State, Mike) Pompeo. We agreed on the fact that it is not in the interest of anybody in the region and in the world to see a military escalation there."

Tensions have been high between the two countries ever since Washington scrapped the Iran nuclear deal last year, with notable escalations recently.

Iran said on Thursday it shot down a U.S. drone in the Iranian airspace, which the U.S. disputed as in the international airspace. The superpower also blamed Iran for sabotaging oil tankers, which the latter denied.

The U.S. has sent 2,500 additional troops to the Gulf since late May.
