TUNIS, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi said on Thursday that the democratic path chosen by his country is "irreversible" despite many difficulties, a statement released by the Tunisian presidency said.

"The establishment of a second republic requires more efforts to boost the economy and achieve social stability and overall development," Essebsi said during his meeting with Madeleine Albright, chairwoman of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), in the capital Tunis.

The 2014 Constitution built the foundations of a democratic system and drew the civilian character of the state, he added.

Albright praised Tunisia's success on the road to democratic transition.

"The great success of Tunisia will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the stability of the region," she said.

"The NDI will continue to support Tunisian civil society in the legislative and presidential elections," she added.

Albright, also the former U.S. Secretary of State, is leading a delegation on a visit to Tunisia to attend the annual meeting of the NDI's board of directors held in Tunis on June 19-21.
