LANZHOU, June 22 (Xinhua) -- An international seminar on geohazard prevention and mitigation opened Saturday in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province.

More than 60 experts and government officials from nine countries including the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia and France attended the seminar to discuss how to use technologies to address geohazards.

The seminar is jointly hosted by the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) and the China Geological Survey (CGS) and will last until Monday.

Young Joo Lee, director of the CCOP Technical Secretariat, said it has become increasingly important for member countries of the CCOP to understand the risks caused by geohazards and share related information.

Wang Yan, vice president of the CGS, said that Asian countries including China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Mongolia and the Philippines have made great achievements in geohazard prevention and mitigation in recent years, but geohazard management remains a great challenge in these countries.

Wang added that the seminar provides a platform to discuss methods to reduce the impact of geological disasters on people.
