China pushing for strict, law-based implementation of special pardons

BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Sunday called for strict law-based implementation of the order of special pardons issued Saturday, and the decision of granting them adopted by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

At a video conference to mobilize and plan the implementation, the commission asked political and legal affairs organs at all levels in the country to fully recognize the significance of the special pardons for nine categories of criminals, and to do a good job of implementation to ensure fine political, legal and social effect.

The political and legal affairs organs were told to work hard as planned and make sure that special pardons be basically completed before the National Day of China, which falls on Oct. 1, according to a statement released after the conference.

The organs were also asked to do a good work of educating inmates before their release and of helping them return to society smoothly, guiding them to obey the law and discipline, the statement read.

The commission also stressed the importance of sticking to integrity and fairness, strict management, transparency and close supervision in implementing special pardons, and warned against wrong actions such as taking advantage of the special pardons to seek personal gains.
