Mango festival in Indian capital showcases over 500 varieties

NEW DELHI, July 6 (Xinhua) -- More than 500 varieties of mangoes from across India are on display in the ongoing "Mango Festival" in the capital city New Delhi, organizers said Saturday.

The much-awaited festival which attracts thousands of people every year began on Friday in the western part of the city Dilli Haat- Janakpuri.

"The various types of mangoes on display include Amrapali, Rataul, Langra, Chausa, Hussainara, Ramkela, Kesar, Fazri. Along with this, a new variety of mango was grown by one of the leading farmers from Muzaffarnagar in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh named after Indian Cricket Team Captain, Virat Kohli became the main attraction of the exhibition," Sudhir Sobti, Chief Manager (Public Relations) of Delhi Tourism told Xinhua.

Mango is considered as the king of fruits in India. With a history of 30 years, the three-day event is organized by the Delhi tourism authorities in association with the Government of Delhi with around 20,000 people expected to visit the festival.

"Majority of mangoes are from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The aim of this festival is to showcase the specialities of mangoes from different states of India," Sobti said.

Apart from the exhibition, there are around 25 stalls selling processed mango items such as jams, juices, pulps and pickles.

The festival also has some competitions and cultural programs.

"Today we have a mango eating competition for women and on Sunday, the same competition will be for men," said Anudeep Bedi, assistant manager of the Dilli Haat. "Also there are round the clock cultural programs for everyone and some magic show, as well as quizzes, are arranged especially for the children."
