JUBA, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of injuries from gunshots remains high in conflict-torn South Sudan even after a peace deal was signed ten months ago, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Monday.
The charity said in a statement that 97 percent of patients admitted in its health facilities over a recent six-month period across the east African country suffered gunshot wounds.
It said the latest figures is an indication of high prevalence of violence exacerbated by easy access to fire arms.
"We have seen a drop-in fighting between parties to the conflict, a very hopeful sign. However, inter-communal violence - mostly linked to cattle raids and revenge killing - continues to threaten lives at an alarming level," said James Reynolds, ICRC head of delegation in South Sudan.
The Red Cross said women and children remain particularly vulnerable.
