ABUJA, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Six people were confirmed killed by gunmen who raided three villages in northern Nigeria, police said here on Monday.

The gunmen stormed the villages in Kankara district of the northern state of Katsina late Sunday, shooting indiscriminately at the residents, said Gambo Isah, a spokesman for the state police.

The attackers were clad in black robes and rode on motorcycles into the villages of Makkas, Dan Sabau, and Pawwa, the police spokesman said.

The raid, Isah said, lasted more than one hour before the police received a distress call from the locals.

He said the police have launched a search for the killers.

The incident occurred four days after 18 persons were killed in a similar raid across four communities in the state on July 3.
