VIENNA, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Austrian Airlines has transported over 6.7 million passengers in the first half of 2019, a 5.9 percent year-on-year increase, the company said on Thursday in a statement.
The country's flagship airline and Lufthansa subsidiary saw its European passenger numbers grow 4.7 percent during this period, while its intercontinental passenger numbers grew an even greater 13.2 percent.
The passenger load factor (used to assess how efficiently a transport provider fills seats and generates fare revenue) was 78.1 percent, an increase of 2.3 percent, while the available seat kilometers (ASK: a measure of passenger carrying capacity, equaling to the number of seats available multiplied by the number of kilometers flown) were up 5.2 percent.
The number of flights operated by the airline was up 3.3 percent to 66,419.
June itself was also a good month with about 1.5 million passengers, a 4.7 percent increase over the same period last year.
Member of the Board of Management and CCO Andreas Otto said the positive results were achieved despite tough competition from low-cost carriers out of Vienna, and noted that long-distance flights to North America have in particular been well-received since being offered as a daily service.
