Russia takes gold in solo free artistic swimming at Gwangju Worlds

GWANGJU, South Korea, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Russian artistic swimmer Svetlana Romashina took gold in the solo free event at the 18th FINA World Aquatics Championships on Wednesday in Gwangju.

Romashina finished first with 97.1333 points, claiming her second gold of these championships. She won her first gold in the women's duet technical routine, teaming up with double gold medalist Svetlana Kolesnichenko.

No unexpected changes occurred in the artistic swimming event, as Romashina set the pace in the preliminaries.

As seen in the heats, Ona Carbonell of Spain ranked second with 94.5667, followed by Japan's Yukiko Inui who won bronze with 93.2000.

With the additional gold, Russia has claimed all of its five golds at the tournament in artistic swimming. The Russian team trails China, which has remained atop the medal table from the beginning of the tournament.

The Gwangju World Championships, which opened on July 12, will end on July 28. The swimming races are scheduled to kick off on Sunday.
