ACCRA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Ghana have been drawn into Group C of the qualifying series for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), alongside South Africa and Sudan.

The draw was held in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Thursday ahead of the grand finale of the 2019 AFCON between Senegal and Algeria.

The three teams will be joined in the group by the winners of the play-off game between Mauritius and Sao Tome and Principe later this year.

Ghana was among the top seeds for Thursday's draw despite failing to progress to the quarterfinals of the 2019 AFCON hosted by Egypt, after the Black Stars were edged out by Tunisia in the round of 16 phases of the African soccer showpiece.

There are 12 groups consisting of four teams each in the draw.

The top two teams from the 12 groups plus the best three third-placed sides will qualify for the tournament to be held in Cameroon, who were initially billed to host the 2019 AFCON.

The group stage of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers will begin in October and end in November next year.
