Former Hunan health official gets 11-year jail sentence for bribery

CHANGSHA, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Fang Yibing, former deputy director of the provincial health and family planning commission of central China's Hunan Province, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for taking bribes on Friday, said a local court.

Fang took bribes of over 6.49 million yuan (943,500 U.S. dollars), 29,800 U.S. dollars, 10,000 HK dollars, 33,000 Canadian dollars and 4,000 Australian dollars from 2002 to 2017 when he worked as the president of Hunan Children's Hospital, Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, and deputy director of the provincial health and family planning commission successively, according to the Intermediate People's Court of the city of Zhuzhou.

The bribes included 29,800 yuan which Fang Yibing accepted in collusion with his brother Fang Xiaobing and 150,000 yuan accepted with the help of his wife Xu Aiwei.

Fang took bribes from 26 institutions and individuals to help them seek profits on various occasions such as sales of drugs and medical equipment and project contracting.

Besides the 11-year imprisonment, he was also fined 1 million yuan while his brother was sentenced six years in prison and fined 500,000 yuan.

Their bribes will be seized and turned over to the state treasury, said the court.

Xu will stand trial at a later date.
