FRANKFURT, July 30 (Xinhua) -- German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has vowed more police presence after a boy was pushed onto the track by a man and killed by the oncoming train at the Frankfurt main station on Monday morning.

"We urgently need more police presence," Seehofer told a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday, stressing safety at train stations and the complexity of the task. He also renewed his call for stronger video surveillance in public spaces.

On Monday morning, a 40-year-old man pushed an 8-year-old boy and his mother in front of an oncoming train at the Frankfurt main station. The boy was killed and the mother survived. The suspect also tried to push another person but failed. He was arrested at the station shortly afterwards.

The suspect was an Eritrean citizen who had lived in Switzerland since 2006. He is married with three children, had a permanent job and was considered well-integrated, according to Dieter Romann, head of the German federal police, at the press conference.

Seehofer stressed that the man had entered Germany legally. German media reported the suspect was sought after by the Swiss police over some other offenses and was assumed to have mental illness.

The perpetrator is accused of murder and attempted murder by the Frankfurt prosecutors' office on Tuesday.
