HELSINKI, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- One person died and one was critically injured on Saturday afternoon when a small sailing boat and a high speed leisure boat collided in the Baltic Sea archipelago in southwestern Finland, media reported.

Three others were lightly injured, including one child. There were eight people on the two boats. The accident took place 30 kilometers south of the city of Turku.

Anssi Somppi, the regional sea rescue director, told newspaper Turun Sanomat the response amounted to a large sea rescue operation. Medical teams were flown to the scene by helicopter.

The motor boat was over ten meters long while the sailing boat was much smaller and low in construction, Somppi said.

The police told the media later the incident was investigated as aggravated manslaughter and aggravated endangering of transport safety. Both boats were on the official shipping lane. Weather conditions were good.
