ISTANBUL, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- A total of 35 flight teams from across Turkey performed spectacular shows on Sunday with their home-made flying vehicles in Istanbul.

The Red Bull Flight Day competition was held at the Caddebostan beach on the Asian part of the city along the Marmara Sea for the fourth time in Turkey.

Wearing colorful flying suits, the contestants jumped from a six-meter-high launching platform into the sea with their innovative aircraft.

The teams built their flying devices by considering how far they could fly without engine and the creativity in the design.

According to the rules, the vehicles must not exceed three meters in height and should be eight meters in length.

The pilots were required to sit in a crouching position on top of their aircraft, rather than being inside a capsule attached to the vehicles.

A team of four young people joined the competition from the western city of Izmir with an air vehicle in the shape of a slipper.

They called themselves "Mother Force," remembering how their mothers patted them with slippers when they were young.

"We want to make our mothers' slippers fly this time," the crew said in their presentation.

Another group named "Flying Bats" performed their flight on a bat-shaped device, while "Sweet Dreams" flew with a bed-like tool.

Thousands of people filled the beach to watch the breathtaking performances of the teams.

At the end of the competition, some spectators had the chance to fly with the Red Bull Air Race aircraft.

The contest has been held annually since 1992 at different locations across the world.
