BERLIN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Following the recent record discovery of 4.5 tons of cocaine in the port of Hamburg, another 1.5 tons of the drug were discovered during the search of a container ship, a spokesperson for the Hamburg main customs office announced on Wednesday.
"During the search of a container ship, officers of the Hamburg main customs office were able to seize another large quantity of cocaine last week," said Oliver Bachmann, press spokesperson for the Hamburg customs office.
At the beginning of August, German customs discovered 4.5 tons of cocaine with a street value of around 1 billion euros (1.11 billion U.S. dollars) on a container ship.
The discovery was the largest single cocaine seizure in Germany to date, according to the German customs office.
On Wednesday, German customs officers found another 64 sports bags containing "1,575 packages of pressed cocaine" while conducting a search of another container ship, according to press spokesperson Bachmann.
"The container with tobacco cartons was loaded in Rio Grande, Brazil and was to be unloaded again in Antwerp," Bachmann said.
The cocaine had a street value of 350 million euros as "the pure content is again very high," according to Hamburg customs office spokesperson Bachmann.
Further investigations "in particular into the clients" were being conducted by the Hamburg customs investigation office on behalf of the Hamburg public prosecutor's office.
The seized cocaine had already been destroyed under "strict secrecy and extensive security precautions," the German customs office announced.
