TOKYO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday as investor sentiment was bolstered by Japan's gross domestic product data for the April-June quarter coming in ahead of expectations, with Wall Street's overnight rise also adding support.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 176.77 points, or 0.86 percent, from Thursday to 20,770.12.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 11.30 points, or 0.75 percent, at 1,509.96.

Mining, precision instrument, and oil and coal product-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
