THE HAGUE, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Dutch cyclist Amy Pieters captured the European Championships women's road cycling gold on Saturday in Alkmaar, The Netherlands.
After four of the 10 rounds of 11.5 kilometers in and around Alkmaar in the province of North Holland, Pieters escaped from the peloton with Italy's Elena Cecchini and Lisa Klein of Germany.
The trio got an advantage of two to three minutes on the flat and windy Dutch roads. The breakaway held on to the start of the last round, when the advantage was only 45 seconds.
The 28-year-old Pieters beat Cecchini and Klein in the final sprint in Alkmaar for the biggest win of her career. Lorena Wiebes of the Netherlands finished fourth.
