LONDON, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Around 93 percent of homes in Britain now have access to the internet, a study by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed Monday.
The figure is 3 percent higher than in 2018 and a 23 percent increase over the past 10 years.
The survey also revealed that more than 60 percent of British homes not connected to the world wide web said they did not feel they needed the internet in their lives.
With more than 27 million households in Britain, it points to more than a million homes not linked to the internet.
ONS said 87 percent of all adults in Britain use the internet daily or almost every day in 2019, while more than half of adults aged 65 years and over having shopped online in 2019 -- the first time the number has exceeded 50 percent among the age group.
The survey also revealed that among all adults, 84 percent use the internet "on the go" in 2019, using a mobile phone, smartphone, laptop, tablet or handheld device.
The percentage of adults who make video or voice calls over the internet has more than trebled over the past decade to 50 percent in 2019, the study revealed.
On internet use, ONS said online banking has also shown a large percentage point increase, rising by 32 percentage points since 2009.
Around 82 percent of adults have bought goods or services online in the last 12 months, an increase of 5 percentage points since 2018, it said.
Showing the downside of the internet, ONS said 7 percent of adults have suffered fraudulent debit or credit card use from using the internet in the last 12 months.
The most common security issue faced by adults when using the internet was fraudulent emails and messages, with 37 percent of adults encountering this problem in 2019.
