PARIS, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Monaco suffered their second consecutive defeat into new campaign of Ligue 1 after losing 3-0 at Metz, while Argentine striker Dario Benedetto missed a penalty in Marseille's goalless draw with Nantes in the second round on Saturday.

New recruits Wissam Ben Yedder and Henry Onyekuru failed to impress in Monaco debut. Like their season opener against Lyon, the 2017 league champions were reduced to 10 men for most of the match as Ruben Aguilar was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge in the 34th minute. Monaco's midfielder Cesc Fabregas had been dismissed with less than half an hour played against Lyon.

Metz forward Habib Diallo was a constant threat to Monaco's goal in the first half. Three minutes into the match, Diallo rounded goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, only to see his shot stopped by Benoit Badiashile on the line.

But Diallo managed to open the scoring account for the hosts on 11 minutes. Referee Eric Wattellier consulted VAR to award Metz a penalty due to Monaco skipper Kamil Glik's handball inside the box, before Diallo stepped up to beat Lecomte.

Following Aguilar's early exit, Monaco were under restraint by the newly promoted side. Diallo found the net again nine minutes after the restart on a loose ball, and captain Renaud Cohade secured Metz's victory in the 67th minute.

Marseille's head coach Andre Villas-Boas brought in Benedetto and Alvaro Gonzalez into the starting line-up.

Marseille got a spot kick around the half hour mark due to Abdoulaye Toure's handball, but Benedetto fired it over the cross-bar.

Marseille's veteran goalkeeper Steve Mandanda kept a clean sheet with several crucial saves in the second half.

Last season's runners-up Lille fell 1-0 at Amiens, whose forward Serhou Guirassy scored the winner. Lille's midfielder Boubakary Soumare was given a marching order in the first half.

Also on Saturday, Bordeaux drew 1-1 with Montpellier, Nimes lost to Nice 2-1, and Toulouse edged Dijon 1-0.

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will visit Rennes on Sunday in a repeat of last season's French Cup final.
