SUVA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Fiji is committed to sustainable development in its energy sector to ensure a sustainable and renewable energy supply for the country, a government minister said on Tuesday.

According to a government statement, speaking at the International Symposium on Renewable Energy, Environment and Climate Change 2019 in Nadi, Fiji's third largest city, Fiji's Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Jone Usamate said that the Fiji government is committed to sustainable development and they have a number of ambitious targets and plans towards building a Climate-Resilient country.

"Fiji has a 5-year and 20-year National Development Plan (NDP) and National Determined Contribution (NDC) Implementation Roadmap," he said, adding that a lot of work has been done to make the achievement of these targets a reality.

The minister said that the government had an aim to achieve 100 percent of electricity generation through renewable energy sources by 2036 and a 30 percent reduction of carbon emissions from the Energy sector by 2030.

He said these carbon emission reductions will come from conversion to renewable energy and Energy Efficiency programs.

"Achieving 100 percent electricity generation from renewable energy is not a simple task because resources are often intermittent, capital intensive, research intensive and dependent on appropriate technology," Usamate said. "Nevertheless, a lot of work has been taking place to make the achievement of these targets a reality. There is now a strong emphasis on hydroelectricity, solar and we are continuing our work on bio fuels."

The three-day conference brings together various institutions from around the region to allow sharing of knowledge and ideas toward a sustainable energy sector for Fiji and the region.
