Afghan police arrest 29 drug-related suspects

KABUL, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan law enforcement agencies have detained 29 people for alleged drug-related crimes within a week, authorities said on Tuesday.

"Counter-Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) together with Afghan security forces busted 22 drug cases and captured 29 people across Afghanistan within the past week," the Counter-Narcotics Criminal Justice Task Force of Afghanistan (CJTF) said in a statement.

The detainees, including a woman, were suspected in trafficking more than 1,590 kg of heroin, more than 26 kg of morphine, 18 kg opium, 60 kg of hashish and 16 kg of other chemical substances, according to the statement.

After initial investigations, the CNPA has handed over the cases to the Central Narcotics Tribunal or CNT, a special Afghan court for jurisdiction of major drug cases, the statement noted.

In addition, primary and appellant courts of the Central Narcotics Tribunal has sentenced 18 drug suspects to different ranges imprisonment over the period, the statement noted.
