SOFIA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The number of Bulgarian residents who made tourist trips was 1.22 million in the second quarter of 2019, a 12.4-percent increase year-on-year, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said Thursday.

As many as 75.7 percent of the Bulgarians traveled only within the country, 19.1 percent traveled only abroad, and 5.2 percent -- both in the country and abroad, the NSI said.

"Holiday and recreation" was the main reason for tourist trips in the country and abroad with figures reaching 46.2 percent and 78.4 percent respectively, followed by "visit relatives" with 41.3 percent and 14.1 percent, the data showed.

Meanwhile, the survey, which covers people aged 15 and over, showed that the average spending per person for private trip was 113 U.S. dollars in the country and 374 dollars abroad.

At the same time, the average expenditure per person on business trips was nearly 96 dollars for domestic trip and 680 dollars for outbound trip, the NSI added.
