ABUJA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Seventeen people were killed when a passenger bus collided with a truck in Nigeria's Kwara State on Thursday, the road safety police said.

Two others were also seriously injured as the 18-seater Toyota bus had a head-on collision with an oncoming truck along the busy Jebba-Ilorin highway in the state, said the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The road safety commander in the state Usheme Eshiet told reporters in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara, that the incident was caused by overspeeding and dangerous driving.

The vehicles collided as they approached a bend along the highway, Eshiet said.

He said the drivers could not maneuver the sharp bend properly, causing the head-on collision.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to an annual report by the FRSC, there were 9,383 reported road traffic crashes in 2017, including 2,587 fatal cases which resulted in 5,121 deaths.
