JERUSALEM, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke over the phone on Friday about coordination between the two nations' armies in the region, said the Israeli prime minister's office.

The office issued a statement saying the two leaders discussed "regional developments and the situation in Syria, with an emphasis on tightening the mechanisms of military coordination."

Putin and Netanyahu agreed to continue the talks over security issues, according to the prime minister's office.

The prime minister also updated the president on the result of his visit to Ukraine earlier this week, during which he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The talk took place a day after the United States said Israel is behind a recent series of blasts in Iraq. U.S. officials told the New York Times on Thursday that Israeli forces carried out at least one airstrike on weapons depots and bases belonging to paramilitary groups backed by Iran, Israel's archfoe.

The Russian and Israeli armies coordinate their moves in Syria to avoid clashes. Russian forces fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's army and the Israeli air force has carried out hundreds of airstrikes, saying the attacks aim at Iranian and Hezbollah targets.
