Macao's retail sales edge down to 2.21 bln USD in Q2

MACAO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The value of retail sales in Macao fell by 0.8 percent year-on-year to 17.86 billion patacas (about 2.21 billion U.S. dollars) in the second quarter of 2019, with the sales volume dropping by 0.5 percent, the special administrative region's statistic department said here on Saturday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that among the major retail activities, sales values of adults clothing, and watches, clocks and jewellery registered notable decline at 10.9 percent and 4.2 percent compared to the second quarter of 2018.

On the other hand, sales values of automotive fuels, and goods in department stores increased by 7.3 percent and 6.7 percent respectively.

Value of retail sales in the second quarter of 2019 decreased by 12.7 percent as compared with the revised figure of 20.46 billion patacas (about 2.53 billion dollars) in the first quarter.

As compared with the second quarter of 2019, 46.3 percent of the retailers expected stable performance in the third quarter, 39.9 percent envisaged unfavourable business prospects and 13.8 percent predicted a favourable outlook.

For the first half year of 2019, value of retail sales decreased by 1.2 percent year-on-year to 38.32 billion patacas (about 4.75 billion dollars) and the volume of retail sales went down by 1.1 percent.
