BRUSSELS, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Belgium has chosen to nominate current Foreign Minister Didier Reynders as its candidate for European Commissioner, according to a statement released on Saturday by the government.

In accordance with the Treaty on the European Union(2007), Belgium, like all other members, has a seat in the European Commission.

By letter dated July 19, President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen officially addressed Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel to ask Belgium to propose a European Commissioner, the statement said.

Finland, who is holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, also invited EU members to send letters of appointment for August 26. Candidates will then have interviews with the elected president.

Since Belgium still has no federal government, it was up to the resigning government dealing with current affairs, which is managing the day-to-day business of running the country, to decide on this nomination.

According to the statement, Michel spoke with the president of the chamber of representatives on this subject and approached different political parties represented in the the chamber (federal parliament).

In view of the talks, the Belgian government put forward on Saturday the nomination of Reynders.

At this stage, 24 EU members have already put forward the nominations of their commissioners.
