LAGOS, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Unidentified gunmen on early Monday killed two policemen and two civilians in an ambush in Ikpoba-Okha area of Edo State, southern Nigeria, according to local police.

The gunmen opened fire on the convoy of a chief medical director of a local hospital, killing two policemen guarding the convoy, said Chidi Nwabuzor, spokesman of the state police, at a press briefing in Benin city, the state capital.

Two other persons in the convoy whose identities were yet to be ascertained were also shot dead, the police spokesperson said.

Nwabuzor said the gunmen took away the director after the attack.

Local sources said the gunmen, numbering six, are yet to make any contact for ransom after taking the medical doctor to an unknown place.

Nwabuzor said an investigation had been launched to track down the gunmen.
